Overview:

The Children's Reference Assistant provides reference services to children birth through 8th grade and adults needing services for children. Furthermore, they will develop and present children's programs, participate in outreach activities, and promote the material collection as it relates to readers' advisory and programs.

Duties:

  • Successfully answer basic library services and directional questions, referring patrons to appropriate area
  • Assist patrons in use of self-service circulation equipment
  • Effectively and efficiently assists patrons with computer, photocopier, and other equipment questions
  • Competently construct a complete search of the library catalog
  • Efficiently locate items on the shelves and in sorting areas
  • Engage in PR to the public and marketing from the public
  • Efficiently answer basic reference questions at the Children's Reference Desk
  • Effectively construct a competent and complete search of the library catalog to meet patron's needs
  • Familiar with library's databases and informational websites to recommend and instruct patrons
  • Effectively plan and present programs as assigned
  • Effectively and efficiently assist patrons with computer questions
  • Familiar with trends in children's literature for reader's advisory and suggestions for purchase
  • Prepares error free bibliographies, pathfinders, website lists as needed
  • Checks lists of titles in library catalog
  • Maintain displays
  • Track and compile patron interactions with statistics
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Skills:

  • Pleasant personality, able to work with a diverse public and staff
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral
  • Spanish fluency a plus
  • Able to work efficiently and independently and complete assignments with limited supervision
  • Familiar with computer productivity software, e-mail and timesheets
  • Sound decision maker, able to respond appropriately in interpreting and applying policy
  • Familiar with internet resources and search strategies
  • Able to accurately type and/or put items in order, alphabetically and numerically

Minimal Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree
  • 2 years' experience working with children
  • 1 year of library experience preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Working in an office/service desk setting
  • Work daytime, evening and weekend hours
  • Able to travel offsite to an event

Hourly Rate: $18.00 per hour (16 hours per week)
