The River Forest Public Library is seeking a tech-savvy, customer service-oriented librarian to help us connect our community with a wide of array of library services. We are looking for a team player with excellent customer service skills, a genuine enthusiasm for working with 10-14 year olds, a fearless attitude toward technology, and lots of creativity to help promote and deliver our popular program offerings. This part-time position will work in our Adult and Teen Services Department, and will work with people of all ages on a daily basis, including students.

The Adult Services Librarian will be responsible for:

  • Providing information services, readers' advisory, and technology-related assistance at our Adult and Teen Services desk.
  • Collaborating with and assisting Middle School Librarian in creating and implementing appropriate programming for children ages 10-14, their families, and the community.
  • Administering and occasionally facilitating our Wednesday morning drop-in Computer Lab.
  • Assisting with promotion and delivery of library programming and outreach for adults, with an emphasis on seniors.
  • Developing collection as assigned.
  • Performing other library-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited school with at least one year library experience.
  • Broad reading background.
  • At least one year of experience working with children ages 10-14.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work four-hour shifts at public service / information desk.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Experience planning and executing programs for middle school aged children preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Works to maintain a positive organizational climate and to develop an increasing level of customer satisfaction by providing the following services:

-Providing a friendly, welcoming environment and thorough, excellent customer service to all during regularly scheduled desk shifts.

-Understanding and responding to the needs of library patrons by providing accurate and professional information services in person, by phone, and electronically.

-Collaborating with and assisting Middle School and Teen Librarian in creating and implementing appropriate programming for children ages 10-14, their families, and the community.

-Performing basic troubleshooting on public machines while at desk, including fax, public computers, and printer/copier.

-Instructing patrons in person, by phone, by email, and by chat on the use of library digital and online resources, including Enterprise catalog, Overdrive, Flipster, Hoopla, Mango, Lynda.com, and more as added. This includes intensive one-on-one appointments, as scheduled.

-Designing, printing and posting innovative promotions for our resources, services, and programs, including flyers, displays, book lists, posters, and more.

-Facilitating our Wednesday morning drop-in Connect with Tech program and other adult programming occasionally, as needed.

-Maintaining a well-used collection in assigned areas by using collection development analysis tools, actively staying aware of current publishing trends and reviews, and purchasing materials within the allocated budget.

-Creating innovative ways to offer reader's advisory services that promote the love of reading and life-long learning, including reading suggestions, booklists, book displays, interactive online resources, promotions, and more.

-Working collaboratively with the Manager of Adult Services and other department staff to establish and maintain strong community connections to further the library's mission and strategic plan.

-Supporting the Adult Department by providing library-related administrative tasks as needed.

-Performing other duties as assigned.

Necessary Skills and Abilities:

-Ability to provide patient and friendly instruction on the use of library apps, streaming and downloadable media, and basic navigation on a variety of handheld consumer devices (including smartphones, tablets, and e-readers).

-Genuine enthusiasm for working and connecting with 10-14 year olds.

-Demonstrated ability and willingness to collaborate positively in a team environment, including effective interpersonal communication skills, and clear oral and written expression.

-Ability to think creativity "on your feet," solve problems, troubleshoot technology-related issues, and make decisions.

-Experience with and strong interest in emerging technologies and their application in a library setting.

-Must have a broad reading background. Please include a list of the books you've read in the past year with your application materials.

-Demonstrated knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and publishing software, cloud storage, and experience with emerging technologies and their application in a library setting.

-Strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize tasks, exercise initiative, and work independently.
