Public Libraries Honored for Sharing Resources for Their Patrons
A consortium of nine local public libraries have been recognized by the State of Illinois for working together to offer a greater variety of materials such as books, movies and recorded books to their patrons.
Representatives from Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, a member of the consortium, accepted the 2016 Journal of Local Government Shared Service Best Practices award on behalf of the LINKin Libraries Consortium from Illinois Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti November 15.
Carole Medal, Gail Borden Library Executive Director, Robert Moffett, Gail Borden's Division Chief of Access Services, and Alissa Medows, Director of Technical Services, accepted the award.
"I value this award because it recognizes the power of public libraries working together, pooling our resources and providing greater access to the wealth of materials available in our libraries. We are saving taxpayers money through our collaboration," Moffett said.
The nine libraries of the LINKin Library Consortium are a group of standalone libraries in northern Illinois that share library materials for their patrons. Taxpayers from each library in the consortium can independently borrow materials if titles are not owned by their home library or if their library's own copy is already checked out.
Items borrowed through the agreement are free to users and most items are available for pickup within one week. The catalog includes books, Blu-Rays, CDs, DVDs, and recorded books. As of July 2016, the full collection included 2,093,536 titles with 771,858 of those items unique to individual libraries. New titles are added every day.
The LINKin Library Consortium is composed of the following public libraries:
- Arlington Heights Memorial Library
- Cook Memorial Library (Libertyville, IL)
- Deerfield Public Library
- Elmhurst Public Library
- Gail Borden Public Library (Elgin, IL)
- Naperville Public Library
- Skokie Public Library
- Waukegan Public Library
