The Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services is pleased to announce the winner of the 2019 John Philip Excellence in Outreach Award. The ABOS John Philip Excellence in Outreach Award is given to recognize outstanding contributions and prominent leadership by an individual in Bookmobile and Outreach Services. John Philip, known to all as "Mr. Bookmobile", spent his long and honorable career as an advocate of Bookmobile and Outreach Services.
He is the "Father" of the National Bookmobile Conference which started in 1986 and has now evolved into the Association of Bookmobile & Outreach Services. Through his strong leadership and high profile advocacy, Bookmobiles have been recognized as a viable library outreach services. This award honors his dedication and tireless work and serves as a pinnacle for all Bookmobile and Outreach staff to aspire to reach. This year the award is sponsored by Farber Specialty Vehicles, a long time supporter of ABOS.
The 2019 recipient of this award is David Kelsey of the St Charles Public Library. "Through his innovation and dedication, David Kelsey has become a local, state, and national leader in Library Senior Services, especially in serving patrons with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. Recognized as a 2017 ALA Emerging Leader, David has presented on Library Senior Services at conferences for the American Library Association, Illinois Library Association, and Association for Bookmobile & Outreach Services as well as numerous webinars for library systems, state libraries, and library schools.
David has been published discussing Library Senior Services in the March/April 2017 and July/August 2018 editions of Public Libraries magazine and was featured in the March/April 2018 edition of American Libraries magazine.
Under David's leadership of Outreach Services at St. Charles (IL) Public Library, the number of Outreach Services patrons has boomed by 350%. David and his team have launched innovative and creative senior programming at eight senior facilities in St. Charles, presenting over 25 programs a month that reach more than 300 seniors. In FY 2018-2019, Outreach Services will be presenting over 300 programs that will reach more than 4,000 seniors.
David has established outreach interest networking groups for the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS), the System Wide Automated Network (SWAN) Consortium, and the Library Integrated Network Consortium (LINC). David has served on the planning committee for the RAILS Outreach Conference in 2017 and 2019. David also has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS) since 2016 (currently serving as the 2018-2019 Treasurer), has chaired two ABOS committees, and has served as the Coordinator of Registration for the 2018 and 2019 ABOS Conferences. For the 2015 ABOS Conference in St. Charles, David was an opening speaker and arranged local library tours.
David has spearheaded, expanded, and strengthened partnerships with the local hospital, homeless shelter, county judicial center, Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, and clinics providing free medical, dental, and counseling services to individuals living below the poverty line. David coordinates the Library's "Literacy Partners" at over forty community locations, ensuring that books and other library materials get into the hands of nontraditional library users and those who will not normally walk through the library's doors.
Through his leadership, innovation, and dedication, David has made a meaningful and positive difference in the lives of countless seniors in the St. Charles community as well as inspired librarians nationwide to better meet the demands of the growing senior populations in their communities.
The 2019 ABOS Conference will be held in Omaha, Nebraska from Oct 23-25. Mr Kelsey will receive this much deserved award at a special awards ceremony.
