We never guessed that a leaking roof in the present would bring up so much of the past at Lake Forest Library.
Earlier this year, unusual buckling was noticed in one of the 1930s Nicolai Remisoff mural panels that encircle our rotunda and circulation area. Water and seepage was identified as the cause, and this month our leaded copper dome was wrapped (photos by Chris Schoenherr) to protect against further damage. The Library Board issued a Request for Architectural Qualifications to address replacing the dome as well as other potential structural projects.
It isn't uncommon to take for granted things that we see everyday, and for years Lake Forest Library staff and visitors have likely walked past the Nicolai Remisoff murals without a second glance. Entitled Poets and Writers of Antiquity, the murals feature ancient Greeks and Romans including Homer, Sappho, Virgil, and Pythagoras. Library staff delved into the origin and backstory of the murals and put together an exhibit to reignite interest in the art and artist. The exhibit is on display now through the end of January 2018. We hope you'll stop by to see this unique library feature!
