The River Grove Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and tech-savvy individual to manage our Young Adult department. The YA Associate will develop dynamic and varied programs for middle and high school aged patrons, market library programs and services, and provide excellent readers' advisory and reference assistance. This position requires knowledge of young adult literature and graphic novels for teens and adults, staffing the circulation desk when needed, and executing passports.

General Duties:

  • Plans and implements programming for teen patrons
  • Curates the young adult collection to reflect the needs of the community
  • Curates and manages the library's developing Makerspace
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies and non-profits in order to plan and deliver programs to teens
  • Maintains statistics on programs and attendance for the annual reports
  • Responsible for the appearance of the teen department area
  • Provides reference and readers' advisory services to teens and teachers
  • Assists patrons with Simple Scan, MyPC software, mobile printing, copier and other equipment
  • Explains Libby, hoopla, EBSCO databases, and LinkedIn Learning to patrons
  • Creates and distributes the monthly press releases to market programs
  • Posts on the library's social media pages
  • Implements and evaluates programs such as the summer reading program and library card campaign
  • Works with staff and volunteers to shelve, shelf-read, and shift in the collection
  • Understands and complies with the Library's policies and procedures while safeguarding confidentiality and restricted information

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Purchases and weeds materials in the YA collection and all graphic novel collections
  • Performs activities at the Circulation Desk such as creating and renewing library cards, checking materials in/out, and providing computer assistance to patrons
  • Attends professional and community meetings, workshops, and conferences as required
  • Serves as a Passport Acceptance Agent (training provided)
  • Plans and executes adult programming when required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of teens
  • Knowledge of current trends in library services and publications for teens
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Familiarity with SirsiDynix WorkFlows
  • Proficiency with computers, Office Suite, and general digital literacy
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public and staff
  • Ability to respond in an effective manner to the concerns of library patrons
  • Ability to understand and interpret library policies, procedures, and rules
  • Ability to keep records and count money accurately
  • Ability to organize work for efficient use of time
  • Ability to work independently
  • Regular attendance required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of college preferred
  • Library experience or an LTA is helpful
  • Experience working with children or young adults
  • Must have knowledge of and strong interest in young adult literature
  • Excellent customer-service skills and working knowledge of computers
  • Spanish and/or Polish language skills are a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program
  • Minimum one year relevant experience
  • MLIS students are encouraged to apply

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move and/or lift materials up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, and sit
