Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Director of Library & Archives, plans, organizes and directs the ordering, cataloging, and processing of library materials and the automated functions of the integrated library system (Alexandria). Work involves placing orders for library materials, receiving and checking shipments from publishers and/or donors, cataloging materials, making materials shelf-ready, and maintaining the library's automated system. This position is also invested with making routine library technical assistance decisions, assisting patrons with reference, research questions, archival materials processing, and assistance in file and records maintenance.

Essential Functions

  • Performs all basic library functions such as checking in and checking out library materials, placing holds, shelving returned items and maintaining the orderly appearance of the library.
  • Advises the Director of Library and Archives on the selection of books and media materials as well as any other issues related to Collection Development and maintenance.
  • Orders all new library materials using Baker & Taylor Title Source or other vendors when appropriate and maintains all order documentation.
  • Assists members with requests for finding library materials in person and by phone.
  • Downloads MARC records for all new library materials from Baker & Taylor and Midwest Tape into Alexandria ILS and adds local information. Enters copy catalog or original catalog records into Alexandria ILS for donated or special collection materials.
  • Processes all new and donated materials as specified by Director.
  • Weeds and withdraws library materials, deletes titles from Alexandria data base, and prepares items for recycling when appropriate.
  • Assists in the Business Information Center (BIC) which includes making business room reservations and some technical instruction.
  • Assists the Director with archives research requests, data entry into the archives database (ArchivesSpace), and special book/archives displays.
  • Maintains an awareness of current library issues and trends affecting the library and BIC; reads professional literature and attends workshops and/or webinars.

Qualifications & Skills

Education: Participating in a Library Technician Associates (LTA) program or recent graduate with an LTA degree. At least one-year library experience is preferred.

Additional Skills: Working knowledge of integrated library systems, databases, and office technology (printer, copier, phones). Demonstrates competence in customer service, research, organizational and collaborative interpersonal
