Job Title: Full Time Maintenance

SUMMARY

Assists Building Services Director in maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and functional environment for library staff and patrons.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist in maintaining operational efficiency of all HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems through preventive maintenance, timely inspections, and repairs
  • Assist in routine maintenance and improvements related to interior and exterior of the building, outdoor landscaping and grounds, and pest control
  • Keep outdoor walkways and interior floors safe and clear of ice, snow, and water
  • Perform general custodial duties ensuring the building is kept clean and hygienic
  • Responsible for identifying, reporting, and assisting in correcting potential safety hazards
  • Must be able to work independently without direct supervision
  • Responsible for meeting room set up
  • Perform minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs as needed
  • Available to be on-call to assist during staff absences and weather or building emergencies

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or equivalent or general education degree (GED); Proven experience as maintenance worker or other similar position; Basic working knowledge of carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively in Standard English both on the phone and in person. Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to work with hand and electrical tools
  • Ability to safely and effectively use a variety of cleaning products, chemicals, and supplies
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and appropriately

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license and pass a background check.

  • Must have physical dexterity to climb, bend, reach, kneel, or crawl into awkward spaces
  • Must be able to use a ladder for routine building maintenance and repairs
  • Must have the stamina to occasionally stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 75 pounds or more
  • Must have the ability to perform physical labor in variable weather conditions such as extreme hot or cold
  • Must have the ability to talk, hear, taste and smell due to the use of chemicals and machinery
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but can vary and, on occasion, be very loud.
