Project Archivist Position
An experienced Archivist is sought for a project-based contract to process the Mariame Kaba Papers held at Chicago Public Library, Harold Washington Library Center Special Collections. Kaba is an organizer and educator whose work focuses on ending violence, dismantling the prison industrial complex, transformative justice and supporting youth leadership development. The collection reflects over 10 years of her Chicago civic actions and educational initiatives with multiple groups including Chicago Freedom School, Girl Talk, Project NIA, and Rogers Park Young Women Action Team. The contents consist of paper-based and electronic files. The project is set to start in August 2020 with a commitment of 24-30 hours per week not to exceed 170 hours.
MLIS with archives emphasis and/or certification.
Experience processing collections and writing finding guides.
Knowledge of DACs and other metadata standards.
Familiarity with digital formats and issues related to born-digital archival content.
Proficiency in commonly used word-processing applications, databases, and spreadsheets.
Knowledge of African American history and/or women's studies preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Appraising, arranging, processing, applying basic conservation measures and providing intellectual access to the collection.
Collaborate with the CPL Foundation to meet all final reporting requirements for the project.
Salary: $24 per hour
Hours: 24-30 hours per week
Location: Harold Washington Library Center
Length: 6-7 week engagement
