Westchester Public Library seeks a full-time, professional Reference Department Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

●Demonstrates excellent customer service skills and a consistently professional and approachable manner.
●Provides reference and readers' advisory to patrons of all ages in person and via phone, email, and other electronic methods.
●Performs balanced, relevant, inclusive collection development of the adult fiction and nonfiction print collection; and the adult fiction and nonfiction electronic collection; and carefully monitors related budgets and expenditures.
●Manages small group of part-time Reference staff.
●Coordinates all inter-library loans and related processes.
●Curates educational resource lists, bibliographies, and other materials to enhance user experience and promote Library resources.
●Promotes Library programs and services when interacting with patrons and visitors.
●Compiles statistics and prepares reports.
●Follows Library policies and procedures.
●Reports personnel, building maintenance, and security or other issues to the Branch Manager.
●Seeks out and attends professional development and continuing education opportunities.
●Participates in committees and special initiatives.
●Other duties as needed or assigned.

Must be willing and able to multi-task and handle challenging and changing situations.
Must have strong organizational skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.
Must be proficient in databases and office productivity software.
Must have integrity, be open to ideas, and be inclusive of diversity. Sense of humor a plus.
Public library experience preferred.


●Master of Library Science degree from ALA-accredited school.
●Ability to achieve Indiana Library Certification 3 within six months.
●Willingness to work a shift rotation of evenings, weekends, and special events as needed.

Working Conditions:

●Normal library/office indoor working conditions; mild exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, and similar).
●Noise level is typically low to moderate.

Salary from $38,000 depending upon experience, with an excellent benefits package:

•We pay both the employee and employer portions of health insurance coverage for full-time eligible employees, and we make a generous annual contribution into covered employees' individual Health Savings Accounts.
•We pay both the employee and employer portions to make the maximum allowable contribution into the Indiana Public Employee Retirement Fund for full-time employees.
•We pay both the employee and employer portions for life insurance coverage for full-time employees.
•Full-time professional employees accrue 20 vacation days annually; accrue sick leave; and are compensated for 12 holidays annually.
•We also offer both full- and part-time employees the option to participate in Hoosier S.T.A.R.T. retirement savings plans for employees of the State of Indiana.

Westchester Public Library is a township library operating two branches, a service center, and the Westchester Township History Museum; serving Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor, and Dune Acres; located four miles from Indiana Dunes National Park and forty-six miles from Chicago.
