POSITION TITLE: Resident Librarian
POSITION TYPE: Full-time Librarian Faculty
LOCATION: Evanston Campus

SUMMARY: As members of the ACRL Diversity Alliance, Northwestern University seeks a dynamic early-career librarian to participate in a three-year Residency Program. The resident librarian will participate in three library service rotations for their first-year of the program and then select a specialization that aligns with the librarian's career aspirations for the second-year. The third-year will consist of developing a research project or presentation of the resident librarian's choosing, career development support and mentoring. The resident librarian will be expected to engage in an array of library services and scholarly activities and engage with the university, community, and profession. Roles and responsibilities will vary each year as determined by the projects and rotations.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES: The following are examples of experiences in different library service areas. These are just starting points, and specific experiences will be designed by taking into account the skills and professional interests of the librarian, and current library needs:

  • Instruction: Design a research guide, video tutorial or other learning tools for library instruction, based on your individual knowledge and expertise.
  • Digital humanities: Collaborate on faculty research and teaching projects.
  • Bibliometrics and research impact: Learn how improving metadata enhances visibility for University faculty.
  • Linked data: Gain understanding of the semantic web environment by developing a workflow for applying different kinds of vocabularies.
  • Student outreach: Design programs to build graduate students' capacity as scholars and researchers.
  • Social media: Develop a library promotion series based on your research interests, on our collections, or on a current event.
  • Digital preservation: Learn about capturing objects to make faithful reproductions and create descriptive metadata
  • Archives: Create finding aids for small collections using ArchivesSpace.
  • Assessment: Learn about ethnographic methods by doing interviews with library users.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ALA-accredited MLS, MLIS, or equivalent earned by time of appointment and within the past year.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent communication skills: ability to listen actively, speak and write clearly, and to effectively present information and ideas to groups.
