Varies within the following ranges: Mon-Thurs: 7:00 am – 9:30 pm; Fri: 7:00 am – 6:30 pm; 2 Saturdays per month: 8:00 am – 6:30 pm; 2 Sundays per month 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
Salary: 
DOQ, grade 2.  $13.50 - $16.50/hr.

Includes: pro rata vacation sick leave benefits

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform opening and closing responsibilities related to entering, vacating, and securing the building and grounds
  • Maintain awareness of possible safety concerns regarding the library building and grounds by ensuring their cleanliness, appearance, and smooth operations in all weather conditions
  • Regularly walk the library premises to maintain an appropriate environment for patrons and staff, including but not limited to offering directional assistance to patrons and checking in with department staff
  • Assist the Person in Charge with potential patron issues, crisis situations, and emergencies, including contacting law enforcement and emergency personnel
  • Perform general custodial tasks as defined in the "Facilities Routine Schedule"
  • Respond to immediate and urgent building issues, including contacting the facilities manager
  • Take immediate and corrective action during and after operational hours within their ability
  • Execute meeting and program set up requests
  • Inspect, assemble (if necessary), and deliver incoming equipment and furnishings
  • Deliver packages and materials in a timely manner to appropriate library staff and departments
  • Attend consortium, professional, committee, and library meetings and conferences, continuing education, and training sessions, as requested
  • Serve on library committees, as requested
  • Represent the library at community events, activities, and meetings, as requested
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Commitment to a flexible work schedule with shift changes and responses to emergency calls as needed
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations and resolve problems in a considerate manner
  • Ability to deal with frequent interruptions in a busy public service environment
  • Must wear uniform provided by the library while working
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions in English
  • Competent in the use of the library's two-way radio security system
  • Understand and use technology systems and equipment as outlined in the Lake Forest Library Technology Core Competencies in the areas of hardware, operating system and file management, software applications, and internet

Education and Other Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of customer service or public safety experience
  • Knowledge of custodial standards and safety practices
  • Ability to operate and instruct others in the use of all equipment necessary to perform duties of the position, including cleaning equipment, hand and power tools, snow removal equipment, and grounds equipment
  • Basic Competency and ability to use Internet search engines, word processing software, email, Microsoft Office Suite, Windows operating systems, and other software
  • Valid Illinois driver's license and reliable access to a vehicle

Physical Requirements

  • Maintain a level of physical fitness required for the position
  • Move, lift, carry, and put away items, weighing up to 75 pounds, sometimes repetitively
  • Ability to climb ladders and operate lifts to complete inspections and repairs
  • Perform strenuous physical activities that require strength and coordination
  • Tolerate exposures to equipment noise, fumes, allergens, cleaning devices, particulates, and fluctuating temperature
  • Work in normal and extreme outside weather conditions
  • Move in and around office equipment, including tights spaces
  • Remain in a standing, walking, and bending position for extended periods of time
