Chicago Public Library CyberNavigator Position


Under general supervision of the Program Manager and Chicago Public Library staff, CyberNavigators assist the public in using the library's computers, databases, online catalog, software, and other technology. CyberNavigators help the public build their digital skills, respond to requests for computer assistance, provide one-on-one tutoring sessions and teach classes on subjects such as Introduction to Computers and Internet. This position requires a high level of teamwork, responsibility and customer focus as well as the ability to interact with youth, adults, and the general public in an appropriate manner.


  • College student or graduate
  • Familiarity with basic functions of software, email, and internet
  • Commitment and ability to learn and use basics of automated library systems


  • Responds to patron inquiries; Assists and trains patrons in computer related tasks
  • Conducts one-on-one tutoring with patrons on topics such as job searching, social media, and general computer information
  • Instructs classes on a variety of basic technology related or workforce development subjects
  • Updates class and tutoring materials as needed
  • Operates a variety of equipment including desktop and laptop computers, printers, copiers
  • Performs basic technical maintenance when needed
  • Assists patrons with resume creation and other functions to support workforce development
  • Contributes to daily record and statistics keeping
  • Resolves less complex technical problems immediately; Refers more complex reference and technology issues to senior level library staff
  • Participates in community outreach


  • Job experience and/or coursework in computer technology, hardware or software applications and troubleshooting, multimedia, Internet research, teaching or training
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills for providing customer service and interacting with staff across the organization
  • Willingness to take direction; ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, and service-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and tasks independently and appropriately
  • Ability to work successfully with youth and adults
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Desire to help their local community
  • Patience with students and patrons
  • Experience as tutor or instructor
  • Previous leadership experiences, and/or other work related experience highly desirable
  • Bilingual individuals are encouraged to apply
  • Commit to a consistent weekly schedule
  • Commit to attend paid training

Salary: $15 per hour

Hours: Hours are year round and vary by branch- ALL PART TIME HOURS, MAINLY MONDAY – THURSDAY
