The University of Illinois at Chicago Library seeks a dynamic and visionary individual for the position of a tenure-track University Archivist. The University Archivist has primary responsibility for planning, developing, and maintaining the university archives program. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and University Archives, the archivist will provide leadership and expertise in archives and records administration, access to university records and archives in all formats, and research support.
This tenure-track appointment includes the expectation that the faculty member will be actively engaged in and significantly contribute to the profession through research/scholarship and service related to professional and scholarly interests. This includes publication, presentation, and committee work at various levels. About University Archives
The University Archives serves as the official "institutional memory" of the university, providing long-term preservation and access to the collection documenting its development and history. The University Archives is part of the Special Collections and University Archives Department that is distinguished for its strong collections in health sciences, social justice and the history of Chicago. The university archives are located at both the Richard J. Daley Library and the Library of Health Sciences, Chicago.
Specific Job Responsibilities:
· Plan, develop, and implement the university archives program within the academic research library setting.
· Identify, select, and acquire UIC archival collections, faculty papers, and institutional records of enduring value.
· Prioritize, oversee, and participate in accessioning, arrangement, description and preservation of archival collections in physical and digital formats.
· Collect contemporary content using a strategic and creative approach and build on a strong foundation that includes records reflecting diverse perspectives of campus life.
· Collaborate with Records and Information Management Services in the management of university records; advise campus units and departments on scheduling and preservation of their records.
· Promote the interpretation and understanding of the university's history through reference, outreach (including creation of physical and digital exhibits), research, publication, and instruction.
· Supervise staff and/or student and intern work
· Provide reference services for Special Collections and University Archives.
· Build a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement to fulfill the University requirement for tenure and promotion.
· A Masters in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program
· Formal coursework or training in archival management and theory, including electronic records
· Two years of experience working in an academic or research environment
· Experience working in an archives or records management setting
· Supervisory experience in any setting
· Experience using archival collection management software, such as SKCA, ArchivesSpace, or Archon
· Familiarity with born-digital materials and electronic records
Salary/Rank/Contract: Tenure system faculty appointments begin at $65,000; twelve month appointment; 24 days vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the Illinois State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment required;
