Chicago Public Library Teacher in the Library Position

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision of Chicago Public Library staff and the Program Manager, Teachers in the Library help children successfully complete their homework assignments and improve their work habits. They work to develop positive relationships with children that will increase their confidence and motivate them to do their best. They help create a supportive environment, in which children and parents see the Chicago Public Library as a resource for afterschool learning. This position requires a high level of teamwork, resourcefulness, and the ability to demonstrate and reinforce learning concepts.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT

  • Valid Illinois teaching certificate (substitute certificates not accepted)
  • At least one year of classroom teaching experience
  • Understanding of common core standards
  • Familiarity with basic functions of software, email, and internet
  • Commitment and ability to learn and use basics of automated library systems
  • Availability to work Monday – Thursday starting no later than 4pm

TASKS AND DUTIES

  • Help direct children and get them focused on their homework
  • Suggest learning strategies
  • Work with neighborhood teachers on specific assignments
  • Work closely with Branch Librarians to assist young library patrons
  • Demonstrate and reinforce learning concepts
  • Talk with parents and caregivers about specific assignments
  • Conduct skill drills
  • Create learning games
  • Work with library staff to integrate learning strategies and library resources
  • Be asked to attend trainings and professional development workshops

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Teaching experience, ideally across multiple grade levels and subject matters
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and staff across the organization
  • Willingness to take direction; ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, and service-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple students at various levels
  • Ability to work successfully with youths ages 3-19
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Desire to help their local community
  • Bilingual individuals are encouraged to apply
  • Commit to a consistent weekly schedule, typically 12 hours per week
  • Commit to attend paid training

Salary: $25 per hour

Hours: Monday – Thursday, approximately 3p-6p (must be able to start by 4pm)

Location: Chicago Public Library branches throughout Chicago
