The Blue Island Public Library Board of Trustees is seeking a professional, dynamic and enthusiastic new leader. Historic Blue Island is home to beautiful architecture and dedicated community members committed to Blue Island who value library services. Blue Island boasts an updated and engaged Chamber of Commerce and a growing local artists' community including community gardens and BIOS farm. The library is home to a Tech. Annex with a full recording studio and accompanying software for budding musicians as well as a Maker Space for budding artists.
Over 20,000 unique visitors enter the library monthly and over 9500 attended programs in 2018. The library serves a diverse population of 23,000 with a significant Spanish speaking population and has an annual budget just under $1.4 million, with healthy reserves.
The Director reports to an appointed, nine-member Board of trustees. The position requires an ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Library and Information Science and at least five years of progressively responsible library experience, with at least three years in a supervisory role, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills and familiarity with current library trends. The successful candidate will preferably also have experience with budget management, show demonstrated leadership ability and experience working with diverse populations.
The Director handles levy and budget preparation, monthly board reports and board packet preparation, building related issues and has overall responsibility for an excellent 33 member staff, 14 of whom are full-time with eleven direct reports. The Director is expected to represent the library in a variety of capacities both within the community and the larger library community.
