General Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator of Reference, Instruction, and Academic Engagement, the Data Literacy Librarian will play a key role in developing programmatic support of numerical and geospatial data services, including facilitating access to data resources and providing research and instruction support to faculty and students in their use across the curriculum. The position will also serve as a liaison to one or more academic departments.

Responsibilities & Duties

Data Literacy Services:

  • Provides consultation, research support and instruction in the discovery and use of statistical and numerical data resources to the broad campus community.

  • Collaborates with liaison librarians and appropriate university units (e.g., Social Science Research Center) to facilitate access to data resources across the disciplines.

  • Support the Library's collection development initiatives with a focus on datasets and sources, assisting liaison librarians in the identification of relevant numeric data collections in their assigned areas.

  • Participate in outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing awareness of data collections and services.

  • Provides instruction and advice regarding statistical software packages such as SAS, SPSS, Stata, R, and NVIVO to students and researchers.

  • Participate in DePaul University initiatives and professional committees related to data management and government information.

Teaching and Learning:

  • Support the development of students' data literacy and numeracy skills and collaborate with instructors to promote and facilitate the use of data in their classes.

  • Provide instruction on the use of published government information and statistics (e.g., City of Chicago Data Portal, Illinois Geospatial Data Clearinghouse, U.S. Census Bureau and Research Data Centers), statistical software and other tools that support data-intensive research.

  • Plan and conduct professional development opportunities for liaison librarians related to the identification of and access to data specific to their assigned departments or programs.

  • Provide research support and participate in collection development for the Library's 'e-only' government information collection.

  • Engage in reflective teaching through the use of instructional improvement tools (e.g., peer evaluation or teaching portfolios) under the leadership of the Coordinator of Reference, Instruction, and Academic Engagement.

  • Provide reference and research support in a variety of venues (e.g., in-person, e-mail, instant message).

  • Participate in the coordination and integration of online tools in support of teaching, learning, and research.

Liaison Librarian Services:

  • Serve as liaison librarian to one or more academic or co-curricular programs, as assigned, including responsibilities for provision of information and instructional services, collection management, and engagement with faculty, staff, and students promoting library resources and services.

  • Maintain an awareness of best practices in academic librarianship, including library outreach and marketing, through reading in the scholarly and professional literature, participation in relevant conferences, workshops, and professional development programs, and applies lessons learned to current needs in the University Library.

  • Participate and represent the University Libraries in University, state, regional, or national professional service activities.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Master's degree from an ALA accredited program.

  • 2 years of academic library experience, including at least one year of reference service and/or library instruction.

  • Knowledge of national and international trends in scholarly communication and data services.

  • Familiarity with data management requirements of federal agencies.

  • Familiarity with current trends in government information publication and dissemination.

Preferred Requirements

  • Advanced degree in social sciences or data science.

  • Experience with the use and manipulation of social science and government datasets, including census data, regional data and geospatial information systems.

  • Coursework or demonstrated knowledge and experience with data services, with particular focus on research practices relating to data discovery, analysis, visualization, and management.

  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis tools (e.g., SPSS, SAS, NVivo, Python, and R).

  • Experience with user support for government information services.

  • Experience with data visualization tools.

  • Familiarity with web-based instructional tools, e.g., LibGuides, software for the development of tutorials.

  • Knowledge of MS Office, other routine information technology applications employed at the library or university level, and enterprise-level systems employed for the management of library collections or the provision of library services.

  • Evidence of energy, creativity, initiative and commitment to professional growth.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to spend extended periods standing. sitting, kneeling, crouching, and bending.

  • Routinely lifting up to 25 pounds may also be required.

  • Visual acuity, hand-eye coordination and motor skills sufficient to use a computer, copy machine and other office equipment are required.
