Looking for a hands-on library experience? Calling all MLIS/Education students, this internship is created to give you experience in assisting with program planning and learning how to provide excellent customer service out in the community.
Do you have experience creating and facilitating dynamic youth programs that are hands-on, engaging, and fun? Do you enjoy working collaboratively, as well as being creative and adapting to change? We are seeking enthusiastic applicants who want to make a difference in our community. During the summer, we 'pop-up' in the community, places where people are already gathering, through our Pop-Up Library series. Pop-Up Interns visit scheduled locations throughout the Township, bringing the Library experience with them by leading story time sessions, facilitating DIY hands-on crafts and activities, providing information and making available circulating materials.
This position is very physical. Must be able to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds. A valid driver's license required. Must be 21 years of age by start date of job.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain the Pop-Up Library schedule; communicate with staff at each planned site.
Work with librarians to develop hands-on activities to use at Pop-Up Library stops.
Ensure the Pop-Up Library is stocked each day, with a variety of reading materials for all ages and levels, appropriate for those days' locations, and had ample supplies for planned activities.
Load and unload the van with materials: at each location and at the beginning and ending of each day.
Check-out materials to patrons at each location and record daily circulation statistics.
Sign patrons up for the Summer Challenge.
Compile statistics for daily, weekly, and monthly totals. Submit an end of summer report.
Conduct patron surveys on their Pop-Up Library experience and submit report on findings with suggestions for improvements.
Communicate effectively with patrons and staff at various site locations, i.e., apartment complexes, schools, park districts, etc.
Assist in maintaining collections, assuring that materials are in good condition and, if not, are repaired or replaced.
Represent the library in a professional manner.
Attend meetings and training as required or requested.
Abide by the Standards of Excellence for employees and policies and procedures of the library.
Treat all patrons and employees fairly and with an open mind; maintain patron and employee confidentiality.
Communicate clearly in English, either in person, on the telephone, and in writing.
Cope with the stress of the job and get along with coworkers.
Maintain the ability and patience to understand and to be understood by non-English speaking patrons.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university is required. Enrolled in an MLIS degree program preferred. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required as well as software technology for young people.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
A valid Illinois Driver's License is required for this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
