Job Description: The River Forest Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic Library Associate for our Adult and Teen Services Department. This position will serve adults, teens and middle school age patrons. This position will provide valuable experiences for someone preparing for a career in public libraries.
The Adult & Teen Services Associate will be responsible for:
- Providing reference, readers advisory, and technology-related assistance to patrons.
- Creating books displays, bookmarks, handouts and other materials as needed.
- Supporting Department Manager with administrative tasks as needed.
- Opportunity for middle school programming responsibilities may be available.
- Opportunity for collection management may be available.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Works to maintain a positive organizational climate and to develop an increasing level of customer satisfaction by providing the following services:
-Provide a friendly, welcoming environment and thorough, excellent customer service to all during regularly scheduled desk shifts. Assist patrons in using the library's resources to their fullest potential.
-Provide a caring, approachable adult presence to Middle School students, build and maintain friendly relationships, and redirect misbehaviors as needed in collaboration with the entire department during busy after school hours.
-Instruct patrons in person, by phone, by email, and by chat on the use of library apps and digital resources, including Enterprise catalog, Overdrive/Libby, Hoopla, Mango, Flipster, and more as added.
-Promote the love of reading and life-long learning by providing reader's advisory services including reading suggestions, book displays, booklists, interactive online resources, promotions, and more.
-Understand and respond to the needs of library patrons by providing accurate and professional information services in person, by phone, and electronically.
-Support the Adult and Teen Services Department by providing library-related administrative tasks including creation of on-order records, item status changes, title deletions, data entry, and more as needed.
-Perform collection development in assigned areas, as needed.
-Assist with library programming and promotional activities.
-Work regularly scheduled public service desk shifts.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
College degree and experience working with the public. Must enjoy working with people of all ages. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, and availability from 3:00 to 6:00 pm on weekdays is strongly preferred. Must be customer-service focused. Computer and technology skills, especially knowledge of Microsoft Office products and cloud computing, are essential. Proficiency in downloading ebooks and streaming media to a variety of handheld devices strongly preferred. Broad reading interests preferred. Must be able to work independently and exercise initiative. Preference given to currently enrolled MLS students.
Necessary Skills and Abilities:
-Must have a broad reading background.
-Demonstrated knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, and publishing software; Google Drive suite; and experience with emerging technologies and their application in a library setting.
-Ability to provide patient and friendly instruction on the use of database resources and streaming / downloadable media on a variety of handheld consumer devices.
-Demonstrated knowledge of reference resources in a public library setting.
-Highly organized, able to multi-task, exercise initiative and work independently.
-Excellent interpersonal skills and clear oral and written expression.
-Ability to think creativity "on your feet," solve problems, troubleshoot technology-related issues, and make decisions.
-Demonstrated ability and willingness to collaborate positively in a team environment, including effective interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to express yourself clearly in person and in writing.
