The Mokena Community Public Library District Library seeks an individual who is passionate about youth services and who is friendly, energetic, motivated and possesses effective communication skills to lead our Youth Services department. This is a high public contact position requiring professionalism, poise, excellent customer service skills and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining the high service standard and customer satisfaction we have established. Candidates must have a positive support/service attitude, excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills for a team environment along with the ability to work independently.

Areas of responsibility include: Day-to-day operations of the youth services department; planning, implementing, managing, evaluating and carrying out of youth services programming; collection development for Birth – 5th grade; promoting youth services activities; collaborating with pre-schools and grade schools; working with Directors and fellow Supervisors as a member of the management team to develop long range plans, conduct performance evaluations of assigned staff, etc. In-depth working knowledge of library automated circulation systems is essential. Knowledge working with the Sierra system in a consortia environment is a plus.

Education, Experience, Qualifications, and Skills Required

Bachelor's Degree with at least 2 years of experience. Positive support and service attitude is required to meet, communicate with and work with vendors and staff to effectively manage children's department of the library. Proficiency in the use and troubleshooting of technology is required. Collection development of all children's printed, electronic and AV materials required. Preparation and planning of all children's programs, summer reading programs, special programs and children's promotional materials is required.

Physical Requirements:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining a physical condition necessary for sitting for long periods of time, some walking and standing; lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight (5 - 10 pounds); occasional lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight (12 - 20 pounds); frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and pushing; dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of office equipment and utilizing a keyboard. Tasks also require sound perception, color perception, visual perception, and oral communications ability.

Primary Function:

Collection development of children's materials and planning, implementing, managing, promoting, and evaluating youth services activities and events.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintains the confidentiality of patron records and transactions.
  • Youth Services (Birth – 5th grade) Programs – planning, implementing, managing, evaluating and carrying out of story hours, puppet shows, PJ story hours, Summer Reading program, special programs, special craft days and holiday programs is required. Increasing the number of youth programs and participants across birth to 5th grade age ranges is expected.
  • Collection development including weeding and ordering of Youth Services materials (Birth– 5th Grade).Coordinate with Head of Young Adult Services.
  • Preparation of Youth Services articles for newsletters outlining events and programs.
  • Composition and drafting of letters to grade schools and pre-schools about activities, press releases and notices of upcoming children's events at library.
  • Promote Youth Services activities, programs, collection, etc. through library's social media accounts, displays and handouts.
  • Coordination of speakers and special programs for youth services, in coordination with Head of Young Adult,Assistant Director and/or Executive Director.
  • Work with Assistant and/or Executive Director in preparation of annual report, per capita grant, special grants, donations, and other reports as needed.
  • Coordinate with technology support staff in the maintenance and operation of LAN.
  • Troubleshoot equipment; i.e., copy machines, printers, LAN, and game systems as needed.
  • Instructs and assists patrons in the use of print and digital resources.
  • Attend appropriate meetings, workshops, conferences, and committees.
  • Attend basic and advanced computer classes as needed.
  • Prepare annual budget for Youth Services.
  • Extensive knowledge of books, movies, and pop culture for youth.
  • Prepare monthly board reports.
  • Enthusiastic to work with all patrons, while primarily focusing on our youth population.
  • Strong desire to work as an effective team member in achieving efficient and effective library operations.
  • Maintains neatness of public areas including desks, counters, shelves, tables, floors, restrooms, and personal space.
  • Resolve patron conflicts and address concerns.
  • Ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, sense of humor, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Represents the library through regular visits to local schools and other community organizations servicing children and families. Maintains excellent working relationships with their administrators and faculty.
  • Creates, promotes, and presents library programs, events, and services to local schools.
  • Collaborates with other library staff who provide outreach to offer optimal services.
  • Taking shifts at circulation desk as needed.
  • Library tours, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Hours:

This position may require working any of the hours that the Library is open including a minimum of one evening per week and weekends.Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the Library may require schedule changes and flexibility.


Bachelor's degree required plus a minimum of two years' experience.
