Research Impact Specialist

This position is a non-tenure eligible appointment at the rank of Librarian Faculty.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine seeks a Research Impact Specialist to support and expand the services of the Metrics and Impact Core. The core assists individuals and groups in their understanding, assessment, visualization, and reporting of impactful outcomes of research and clinical care efforts across the enterprise. The core provides extensive advisory services for researchers, groups, or departments and centers on topics such as: developing successful publishing and dissemination strategies, managing or tracking publications, maintaining an impactful online identity, measuring or assessing research impact by discipline, and communicating research impact to diverse audiences. This position is expected to be a significant contributor to campus-wide evaluation and assessment activities as well as to priority areas of the Library's Research and Information Services Department.

POSITION REPORTS TO: Head, Research and Information Services

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides support services on issues related to scholarly dissemination, research impact, grant reporting and renewals, rankings, and unique scholarly identifiers.
  1. Aggregates and analyzes data from a variety of sources to assist individuals and groups and develops reports illustrating the impact of faculty and institutional publishing and research activities.
  2. Performs advanced bibliometric and scientometric analyses to provide researchers and administrators with an in-depth understanding of scholarly productivity and emerging indicators of research impact.
  3. Engages in social network analysis and produces data visualizations to facilitate a better understanding of relationships between people, organizations, concepts, or services.
  4. Provides support for grant applications and renewals and assists departments and programs in faculty recruitment.
  5. Provides specialized research support to faculty, students, and administrative staff in areas related to assessment and evaluation (e.g. NIH Biosketch support, citation analyses, and reporting return on investment)
  6. Develops print and electronic support materials on topics related to research assessment and scholarly identity.
  7. Develops and delivers workshop-style sessions on topics related to understanding research impact, reporting impact to funding agencies, optimizing dissemination of research outputs, ORCID, online research profiles and their role in dissemination, and so on.
  8. Keeps abreast of current developments and trends of scholarly publication and dissemination, publication and preservation of scholarly works.
  9. Selects resources (electronic resources, journals, and software tools) to support this area of effort.
  10. Works with faculty and students to develop working relationships, ideas for new programs and services, and a deeper understanding of service needs.
  11. Contributes to the tracking and evaluation activities of the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS).
  1. Provides reference and specialized research services to medical school faculty, students, and affiliated clinical researchers.
  2. Contributes to library-wide planning activities and collaborates with colleagues on projects in areas of shared interest. Actively participates in appropriate library programs and services where appropriate.
  3. Manages projects to effectively and efficiently provide services. Seeks grant opportunities to fund innovation efforts.
  4. Attends faculty and student research seminars, department wide conference and university symposia to keep abreast of current research. Serves on University and Library committees as appropriate.
  5. Participates in scholarly societies, attends academic conferences, and represents the Library in relevant academic activities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Master's degree in library, information science, informatics, or assessment from an accredited program or international equivalent, or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong ability to think and act strategically, and demonstrated success at bringing concepts to realization while meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty/staff, students, and colleagues
  • Proficiency with bibliographic and citation databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar.
  • Awareness of alternative sources of information about research outputs, including grey literature sources and other databases.
  • Proficiency with Excel or other spreadsheet/reporting platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technology tools/skills
  • Evidence of professional initiative.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in person and virtually using a variety of media and technologies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Additional training or interest in topics related to econometrics, statistics, computer science, data analysis, data visualization, or other complementary area. (either in formal credit-bearing courses or in MOOC-style experiences).
  • Experience on a library or University-level evaluation or assessment committee.
  • Experience providing instruction and/or support on topics related to research assessment and scholarly identity.
  • Expertise with data cleaning, including proficiency with OpenRefine or similar tools.
  • Experience with data visualization and data visualization software platforms (e.g. Tableau, Sci2, VOSviewer, etc.).
  • Proficiency with cleaning, manipulation, harmonization, and analysis of data from multiple sources.
  • Demonstrated experience providing instructional and reference services including the creation of online tutorials, surveys, or guides.
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively, independently, and collaboratively.
