Under immediate supervision, performs paraprofessional librarian duties in a unit of the Chicago Public Library, and performs related duties as required.

DUTIES: Under supervision of the Unit Head and other departmental managers, assists with reference and retrieval of items from collection. Provides reference support in-person, on the phone, and in email. Assists in developing and administering library programs and services, as well as conducts library orientation and instruction through printed and electronic resources. Prepares and assists in arranging library displays and exhibits to publicize programs and services. Conducts research on bibliographic data using library databases and the Internet. Assists with class visits and outreach events. Perform related duties as assigned.

LOCATION: Harold Washington Library Center – 400 S. State Street

DAYS OFF: Two days off per week

SHIFT: Will be required to work Evenings and Saturdays

HOURS: 80 hours per month to be scheduled during normal unit hours

Mon – Thurs 9-9, Fri & Sat 9-5 Sun 1-5

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree.

NOTE: Physical day to day responsibilities for this title may include the ability to lift and carry library materials. Ability to stand for extended or continuous periods of time. Ability to bend, stretch, twist or reach out with one's body arms or legs. Ability to climb staircases, ladders and or step stools.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Previous experience with government documents (i.e., Cook County, census statistics, water department information and financial budgets) in a library setting
  • Previous experience conducting presentations and public speaking
  • Previous customer service experience

VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering "yes" or "no" to the question on the online application that asks, "Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?" In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 (Member Copy-4) to your online application which includes character of service status OR a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationary stating dates of service and character of service. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.

Residency Requirement: An employee must be an actual resident of the City of Chicago.
