The Oak Park Public Library is seeking a people-focused, technology-driven, innovative, and forward-thinking professional to join its team.

The Information Technology Specialist contributes to providing the best library experience possible by working with the library's technology infrastructure, servers, applications, computer systems, telecommunications, and local and wide area networks to provide future-focused services and tools that ensure exceptional access, bandwidth, speed, and security. Maintains and updates current systems, implements new systems, supports and trains staff and customers.

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week with excellent benefits. Starting annual salary: $47,500, depending on experience and qualifications.


  • Support the library's technology services efforts to meet the needs of the public and uphold the library's mission, goals, and objectives.

  • Perform day to day operations and tasks for the library's telecommunications, local and wide area networks, network infrastructure equipment, server hardware, software, firmware, operating systems, anti-virus, voicemail, phone system, Integrated Library System, Automated Materials Handler, RFID systems, and other assigned systems.

  • Troubleshoot and support users on PC hardware and software, help desk functions, documentation of systems and procedures, and maintaining equipment database.

  • Maintain, repair, and install new and existing computer equipment.

  • Provide training and assistance for internal users and the public.

  • Assist in installation projects and systems troubleshooting which may require working off hours.

  • Assist in technology purchases, equipment inventory and tracking technology expenditures.

  • Collaborate with other staff to evaluate services and develop strategies for achieving library goals.

  • Coordinate with vendors, managers, and other staff to assist in planning projects, recommending hardware/software purchases, implementing new systems, and other duties as needed.

  • Maintain an awareness of products, services, technology applications, and trends in reading technology and library literature, news media, and blogs.

  • Develop organizational and technical skills as needed.


  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Computer Science or related discipline, or proven track of equivalent information technology work experience.

  • At least one (1) year of library experience preferred.

  • Proven ability with an advanced knowledge of computer hardware, Windows and Apple operating systems, software, and networking.

  • Attention to detail and analytical skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work with limited supervision.


  • This position may have responsibility for supervising staff and volunteers.

  • Some travel required between library branch locations and for training purposes.
