Metadata Assistant (Library Assistant 3)
Under the direction of the Metadata Coordinator, the Metadata Assistant generates metadata and supports digital collections processing for the Digital Berkeley Folk Music Festival Collection. The Collection contains over 36,000 objects including photographs, posters, and other documents needing descriptive metadata.
2 Year Term Position
- Ensures the completeness and accuracy of materials descriptions and adheres to national and local standards for descriptive metadata in a variety of schemas and encodings.
- Creates complex and original descriptive metadata records for ingest into to the Libraries' digital repository. Metadata schema to be used include: Dublin Core, VRA Core, BibFrame, and others in preparation for linked data compatibility.
- Assigns Library of Congress subject headings, LCFGT headings, and other terms from the Art & Architecture Thesaurus.
- Verifies name headings against the authority file. Identifies new records to be submitted to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging.
- Follows standards and guidelines found in RDA, LC-PCC Policy Statements, Subject Cataloging Manual and local documentation.
- Provides input to and helps synthesize conversations with curators and researchers to identify metadata needs for the Collection.
- Assists with the inventories of materials in the Digital Berkeley Folk Music Festival Collection to prepare for digital reformatting or digital accessioning.
- Participates in departmental and working group meetings as needed. Other duties as assigned.
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
- Experience working with members of a project team.
- Experience doing data entry, assessment, and systems testing.
- Experience with, and knowledge of, descriptive metadata standards.

- Previous academic or research library experience.
- Experience working with archival collections.
- Experience creating name authority records.
- Knowledge of folk music and its history.
- Awareness of current metadata generation and transformation practices.
