We support parents, caregivers and educators to help children on their path to achieve essential milestones: learning to read and being prepared for school. This position is responsible for creating and delivering early literacy experiences to infants through preschoolers; connecting with parents and caregivers through programs and workshops; providing outreach to early childhood providers and community organizations; and developing school-age readers and life-long learners through engaging literacy and STEAM programming. - Responsible for the development and coordination of library-wide early literacy programming and initiatives that are consistent with the vision and values of the library, our strategic imperatives, and the diverse needs of the community.
- Provides in-depth and high-level knowledge of early literacy skills and programming to guide staff and customers. This includes promoting an environment that encourages input from all staff, sets high standards and encourages all library staff members to provide exceptional customer service while building staff expertise.
- Coordinates, evaluates, and coaches library staff for development and presentation of early literacy programs such as storytimes, family engagement programs, and informational workshops. Take the lead role in training library staff to disseminate early literacy concepts and practices to parents of children from birth to age 5.
- Identifies and implements emerging opportunities throughout the community for early literacy partnerships including resource sharing, referral and community coalition building.
- Supervises and participates in hiring, training, and evaluation of support staff whose duties include service to young children.
- Develops effective strategies for communicating the library's early literacy goals to individuals and the community through a variety of media.
- Provide reference and readers' advisory service to customers of all ages.
- Actively contributes to broader Youth Services offerings and library-wide programs and services.
Requirements & Skills:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a public library. Experience in developing and presenting relevant programming and instruction. Supervisory experience preferred.
Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work well independently and with a team.
Broad knowledge of children's literature, early literacy and childhood literacy, child learning theories and philosophies, and educational techniques.
Able to effectively communicate with and work with all age groups, specifically young children and their caregivers, from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds to instill a passion for reading and to promote lifelong learning.
Proven experience in creating and/or implementing early literacy initiatives.
Knowledge of ECR2R initiatives and materials and resources that support them.
Desire and ability to serve the public and colleagues with friendliness and diplomacy.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and excel in Our Culture.
Master of Library Science from ALA-accredited program.
