Joint meeting of IHLS, RAILS, the State Library and CPL: Part One

Last Tuesday, April 16, members of the IHLS and RAILS Boards and staff, State Library staff and Chicago Public Library staff gathered for a joint meeting to discuss mutual concerns and share information.  A key part of the meeting was devoted to small group discussions of the following issues:

  • What are the challenges faced by all three systems?
  • What are the strategies for overcoming those challenges?
  • What issues are your member libraries facing?

Lively discussion ensued, as you can well imagine.  Below are some samples.

Challenges:                             funding; members feel disconnected from systems;

Strategies:                               better communication; use technology; strategic planning

Member Library issues:         funding; need for training and continuing education

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these important questions.
