"I believe that multitype library cooperation is essential to providing the best library services for our users in all types of libraries. I would like to involve more academic libraries in this process, publicizing the programs and services available and showing how all libraries can work together to make the most of our resources. My background working in a variety of academic libraries gives me an understanding of many issues which face them. I am excited about the chance to take part in building this new system."

"I am interested in serving on the RAILS Advisory group because I understand the value of library systems. I have attended many workshops, teleconference meetings and benefited from the delivery services. I am keenly aware of how systems help keep libraries and library workers connected throughout the state as well as professional development opportunities. I have had over 30 years experience working in both public and academic libraries, served on State Library committees and on the Executive Board of ILA. Serving on the RAILS Advisory Group would allow me to more actively participate in the transition and preservation of systems. I believe I can represent and communicate the needs of libraries and the constituents in the RAILS service area. "

"RAILS exists to provide support for member libraries and library staff to meet the information needs of their users. From delivery which we rely on to the LLSAPs which promote resource-sharing and Talking Books, what matters to us needs to be acknowledged. As a former PALS board member/officer and academic librarian, I have witnessed how libraries can be strong and dynamic when we put our voices together. I am familiar with the challenges and opportunities for all types of libraries in our region and have a long-established relationship with many of their employees."

"These are exciting and challenging times for RAILS, and I believe it is important for membership to be actively involved in the new system. I believe I can be an effective advocate for the membership. I have 20 years of library experience and previous Advisory Board experience having served as the special library representative on Suburban Library System's Advisory Board in 2001. I'd welcome the opportunity to be part of the Advisory Group and to give member libraries a voice in their system. "

"I would like to serve on the Member Advisory Group because I am interested in RAILS and would like to contribute to its success. I believe very strongly in sharing ideas and information so that all libraries can better meet the needs of patrons. I am fairly new to the library field (I began my first full-time library job in June 2006) and do not bring with me notions of how things used to be done. And I always have an opinion and welcome the opportunity to provide constructive feedback."

"I am very interested in working with the newly merged library system. Located on the southern fringes of the new system I feel I could bring different information to the group regarding our smaller public libraries. Express what would make us run more efficiently and what changes could affect us adversely. "

"I am director of Creve Coeur Library, a public library that serves about 5,000 people with a small budget and we also serve as the school library. I have many perspectives to take in before committing to any action. I also served on the FY12 Services, Operations and Facilities Subcommittee; during many of the subcommittee discussions there was a lot of concern about accidentally having a library’s opinions or concerns not heard. The only way we can make Rails a better system is to make sure that every library has a voice regardless of size, location and budget. "

"I want to serve on the Member Advisory Group because I am interested in keeping the RAILS System membership driven in terms of the services it currently offers and in terms of the services it could potentially offer its member library. I believe that the Librarians at all types of libraries need to have a voice or way to provide feedback to the System Board. I also believe that it is important to maintain some type of networking groups amongst the Libraries within RAILS I see the Advisory Board as a vehicle to do so. "

"Library Systems in Illinois are a vital resource to all library types; libraries both small and large have all benefited from collaborating with their system. As the Library Systems have consolidated that has not changed. In addition to the three core services ( delivery, llsap’s,talking book) that RAILS now supports, I believe that an important secondary (and cost free) mission that RAILS can offer is that of a centralized organization that promotes and facilitates local/regional networking. Having worked closely with the DuPage Library System over the past 7 years; I have come to realize that the best path to an effective Library System is through communication with the members. With RAILS now covering a huge geographic area that was once served by 5 systems; the risk is that RAILS will become removed from its members. I would serve on the RAILS Member Advisory Committee to ensure that the voices of all libraries were heard."

"As the patrons we serve are increasingly diverse, so should the decision makers at the table reflect this fact. I have thirteen years of service at public libraries within the former MLS, DLS, and PALS, including several management positions. I offer a wealth of knowledge concerning public library best practices, as well as a fresh perspective needed during this historic change for our state library systems. I am ready to represent and serve."

"The Illinois library community has recently experienced drastic changes in the services that have traditionally been provided by library systems due to the economic realities of the state. We are also at a point where constant evaluation and evolution of services and reallocation of resources and money are necessary. I look forward to working with RAILS to provide support to both our member libraries and the communities they serve in three particular areas: 1) a recognition of the importance of continuing education and networking opportunities provided by the library system and a recommitment to provision of these opportunities; 2) at a time of increasing demand for resources and decreasing funding, re-establish the group purchasing power of the RAILS libraries; and 3) ensure the continued viability and sustainability of those system services that directly impact service to the public such as interlibrary loan, delivery and LLSAP support. "In my role as Marketing and Outreach Coordinator especially to the business community I have had to be creative and innovative to get the message out that the Library should be the first place you go for help with everything from Social Media to how to use QR codes effectively. I, along with other staff members have presented at ILA, Geneva Women In Business, DLS Days and the City of Geneva. If chosen I would be able to share my experiences and knowledge of how I brought emerging technologies to the business community. I would be honored to be a member of RAILS Advisory Board and help to promote their vision, mission statement and values."

"I would like to serve on the Member Advisory Group because I would like to support RAILS by collaborating with all types of member libraries and providing valuable feedback that will help define membership needs and inform strategic initiatives. As a newly formed and much larger library system, it is imperative that we have clear communication among the entire membership to ensure that RAILS moves in the right direction to meet the needs of the library community. The RAILS Member Advisory Group provides the avenue to make those recommendations and I would like to be a part of that group."

"The creation of RAILS has produced an increased opportunity for networking among all member libraries. The wealth and diversity of knowledge and experience that exists amongst us all is a great resource to be tapped. With over twenty years of working in a variety of public libraries (DLS and MLS), LACONI, on-line forums, etc., I believe I have the experience and passion to represent the library community to RAILS on the issues of communication, van delivery, Talking Books and the role RAILS can play to enrich library service today and into the future. Thank you for this opportunity."

"My service as Director of the Oak Lawn Public Library has spanned nearly 20 years -- through the eras of SLS and MLS --- and included service on System and SWAN Committees through that period. My experience includes three years on ILA Public Policy Committee (2001-04), ten years on the State Library Construction Grant Subcommittee (1999-2009), and 13 years on ALA Council (1996-2010). In all of these assignments, I have been willing to welcome diverse opinions as well as to present dissenting views and to indicate potential pitfalls when necessary. Thank you for considering my candidacy. "

"I am a public library director with both rural and suburban experience. I have been a director in the Suburban/Metropolitan Library Systems for the past 20 years, serving on the Advisory Council twice during that period. I was Co-Chair of the MLS Library Advisory at the time of the merger and helped spearhead communication and meetings with representatives of the other systems to work on defining member library concerns and priorities. On behalf of this group, I attended the Merger Board meetings and spoke to the need for a fair and representative Advisory Council for the new RAILS. I look forward to continuing these efforts to build a new communication network for all of us. "

"I would like to lend my previous expertise in forming the new Advisory Board. I have served on Advisory under Suburban, Metropolitan (at least twice including right after the merger of SLS with Chicago Libraries). I listen to member libraries as well as System staff. I feel it is critical in RAILS development to bring all libraries together in a united system. One of the most pressing issues is bringing the interests of rural libraries and urban libraries together toward a common bond; the survival of ALL libraries in our region as well as the State. In addition, I served on Avenues to Excellence in the 1980’s thus gaining knowledge or rural public libraries. While this knowledge might seem dated; all libraries would like to go into a time machine back when State Library money support was vastly more positive than today as were Systems! "

"More than any time I can recall, libraries can benefit from working together to sustain and promote their services. I am excited to have a chance to help create a new bridge of communication among organizations that have diverse service goals, yet share a common mission to provide vital outreach to their communities. With several years of experience in both public and academic settings--from page to paraprofessional to librarian to manager--I would be grateful for the chance to collaborate with members who have different perspectives but share desire to build a strong foundation for future library service. "Serving on the Member Advisory Committee would be an honor, as I know how important it is to keep the library community connected. As a member of several networking groups, I have seen how talented and supportive this group of people is to the success of Illinois libraries. Participating in keeping that community informed and sharing their concerns with the System Board will ensure that Illinois libraries and librarians remain some of the best."

Indian Trails Public Library District
"Serving on the new RAILS advisory board is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to library evolution. While the systems have changed, library cooperation will still be essential to providing library service to our users at the level that they deserve and need. Indian Trails has benefitted tremendously from the force that was NSLS, and it’s an opportunity for me to give back. Communication will be key—listening, explaining, persuading, brainstorming, and constructing a network will help everyone continue with the important business of library service. I’d like to be a part of that."

Huntley Area Public Library
"I have been fortunate to work in public libraries in Northern and Central Illinois where I have developed knowledge in a variety of areas from reference and interlibrary loan services to technology. I would use this knowledge on MAG to represent the RAILS membership with dedication, integrity, forward thinking, a good attitude, and a love of libraries. For the past 8 years, I have been employed as the Head of Information Services of the Huntley Area Public Library, which is a member of the CCS consortium. I currently serve as chair of the CCS patron access services technical group. "

"I would be very excited to serve on the MAG firmly believe I would be a useful member and bring an important perspective to the group. I would represent not only a public library from the former NSLS, but also mid-sized public libraries in general. I also believe that I will bring a focus necessary to ensure that RAILS fulfills its most critical duties along with the flexibility and imagination to explore unique ways to accomplish those main goals. LaSalle Public Library
"As the Director of the LaSalle Public Library for 13 years, networking and communication amongst libraries is very important to me. To that end I helped organize and continue to lead the West of 47 Group. I served on the PALS Librarians’ Advisory Group since 2004. In 2010 and 2011, I chaired LAC and lobbied heavily to the Merger Transition Board for the creation of a RAILS Librarians Advisory Committee. It is important that member libraries, regardless of size or type, have a voice within RAILS. I look forward to the opportunity to represent and advocate for member libraries."

"If the future of libraries is riding on the rails of RAILS, being a part of this dynamic new library world and future needs strong support, encouragement, enthusiasm and direction from many sources and wealths of experience. I own that vested interest in RAILS that has had me in libraries since 1988. Commitment and a desire to see RAILS succeed are high on my personal and professional agenda."

"As a school librarian, I think it is important for someone like me to be a part of something like the RAILS advisory group so that the needs of school libraries are addressed by the new system. However, it is also an opportunity to better understand how other libraries function and what their needs are so as to have a well-rounded perspective. Having this bigger picture vantage point perspective of other libraries plus already having a school librarian’s point of view would make me an effective member of this advisory group."

"I have worked in the high school library for 18 years and at Schaumburg Public library for 9 years. It isn't always easy to attend workshops or even view webinars since I'm usually in the library, so I would like to explore other ways to share information. I understand how important RAILS is and want to make sure all libraries have access to it. When we share information, we all benefit."

"I believe that multiple types of libraries can and should work together to give the best service. I have been working in schools for almost 25 years. I also worked for 7 years in Youth Services in a public library. I have seen how when libraries of different types work together, the patrons benefit. I hope to see RAILS be a place of learning, sharing and collaboration, for all libraries. I welcome the chance to be a voice for all the libraries of RAILS, by serving on the advisory board."

"I am extremely fortunate to work in a school district that has developed a close relationship with the local public library and with the former DuPage Library System. In the course of an average year, we borrow and lend over 2000 items through the interlibrary loan system. I would like to play an active role in the new system by being a member of this advisory board, encouraging other school districts to take advantage of all of the opportunities that are afforded us as members of RAILS. This is my 17th year working as an elementary school librarian and my 5th year serving as the Bensenville Elementary School District’s library media center coordinator."

"I would consider it an honor to serve on the Member Advisory Group. I have been a teacher for 16 years and a librarian for 9 of them, each experience has been a new adventure and learning experience. I have also had the opportunity to share some of my own expertise from time to time. If given the opportunity to join the Advisory, I would hope to again learn from my peers and share what I have learned throughout the years through collaboration. As NSLS closed its doors it was such a comfort when RAILS opened its doors to support the needs of all of us."

"I would like to serve on the RAILS Member Advisory Group to ensure that the voices of school librarians are heard within the RAILS system, and to promote the importance of library collaboration and shared resources across our state. I am the school librarian for four elementary schools in Glendale Heights, and I have experience in Public and Community College libraries as well. I served on the Library Advocacy Committees in DLS and NSLS."

"As a special library whose primary members are the public, I bring a unique point of view as to how libraries of varying types may work together, support each other, partner, and grow together. Enhancing this perspective is not only my directorship at a special library, but my part-time employment as a reference librarian at a public library."

"As a Special Librarian, I've been a part of NSLS since 1993. Through my involvement with NSLS and the SLA Illinois chapter, I consider myself to be pretty connected with other special librarians and know what their needs are! I would be a good advocate for Special Librarians. I would be honored to be a member of the RAILS Member Advisory Group."

"As a recent graduate of Dominican University's MLIS program, I have a fresh perspective on the issues facing all types of libraries today - technological changes, budgetary cutbacks, and the need to demonstrate value. I have worked in Thermo Fisher Scientific's Information Center for a year and a half and am a current member of the Special Library Association. If elected to the Advisory Group, I will advocate for the best methods of communication and cooperation between RAILS libraries, with an eye toward the needs of special libraries in particular. It would be a privilege to participate in this Advisory Group."
