Position Description: 

Basic Function:  The Librarian ensures the Library obtains, organizes and disseminates the best, most current knowledge on issues related to the NSC’s mission. The material collected and retained in the Library enables NSC staff and other partners to have current state-of-practice knowledge readily available. This enables users to better develop new products, programs and initiatives and to allow NSC members and other Library users to examine trends, set priorities, and develop strategies to prevent unintentional injuries and deaths. The position includes research, reference work, indexing, collection development and cataloging.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • ·         Reference work
  • Works closely with users to understand their information needs
  • Determines most appropriate sources (print, web, proprietary databases, etc.) to respond to information requests
  • Organizes, packages and presents information in a way that emphasizes its usefulness
  • Educates Library users in information literacy skill, including effective use of the NSC Library catalog and external tools and databases as appropriate
  • ·         Indexing and cataloging
  • Identifies documents and knowledge necessary for fulfillment of NSC mission
  • Indexes and adds documents to Library catalog
  • Checks in, routes and screens periodicals for articles to add to Library collection
  • Locates and obtains materials to supplement Library core collection through interlibrary loan or other means
  • Creates promotional materials and documents for Library pages on website, including Library Alerts and Ask the Library Archive
  • Compiles monthly statistics reports on Library activity
  • Coordinates with other departments and staff members to promote Library and Information Services to members, potential members and general public
  • Maintains current knowledge of technological developments and trends in Library Science

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited institution required
  • Advanced competency in information searching/retrieval for both internet and proprietary databases
  • Knowledge of bibliographic instruction methods and other information tool instruction methods
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to think logically, analytically and solve problems
  • Computer knowledge and skills including basic office software, Inmagic/DB Textworks and Sharepoint
